Sens-r: A Low-cost Wireless Sensor Node with Mobility

Sens-r nodes provide a low cost (<A$100/node) testbed for experimentation of mobile wireless sensor network(WSN) algorithms. Pulsed infrared light is used as the communications medium as it is easy to work with infrared light in a small area (eg, classroom or lab).

Below are pictures of the first prototype node. The top view shows 16 infrared transmitters located around the edge of the top PCB, as well as 4 infrared receiver modules spaced 90 degrees apart.

System Overview

• Atmel ATmega128 based mainboard (runs Micrium Micro-C/OSII real-time operating system (RTOS) )
• Atmel ATmega168 based communications subsystem (with 16 IR transmitters (in 4x4 matrix arrangement), and 8 independent IR receiver modules)
• Tamiya 70097 Twin-motor gearbox (L2933 motor controller with PWM, and 2 x pptical wheel encoders)
