SohoNet

SohoNet of London is an advanced digital media network, linking media producers, processors and consumers using an ATM(Asynchronous Transfer Mode)-based network. This network was established by the leading Video, Digital Film, Sound and Special effects companies of London SOHO area in 1995.

The aim of SohoNet is to provide the needs of the media sector such as E-mail, browsing capablity, videoconferencing, and moving files and resources around the connected companies at a high bandwidth. SohoNet is very fast, secure and is also connected to the right places in the media industry. This network can support live video feeds, multi-channel audio and video conferencing to virtual studios.

SohoNet uses a 155Mbits/s optical link for the local area network. This allows companies in the SOHO area to move data around town as though it was their Local network. This network is designed for security as data only passes through secure routes via ATM telephone exchanges. Its network is standards based, vendor & platform independent and is based on ITU, ATM forum and IETF standards. SohoNet is Digital Radio and Television ready.

Recently, media companies in London were connected to Hollywood via SohoNet's global ATM service. Presently the 622Mbps ATM link into SohoNet is provided by the carrier, Videotron. Now Videotron is a part of Cable & Wireless communications. Network services in London are provided by Cable & Wireless Communications. The transatlantic ATM link is a part of the Cable & Wireless Global ATM family.

HollyNet

HollyNet was developed with an industry-wide initiative for establishing a high-speed, broadband, secure network. HollyNet is a metropolitan ATM network shared by the Hollywood studios, production houses and other facilities.

The main aim of HollyNet is to provide connectivity to office, desktop, home or elsewhere in need of bandwidth on demand. HollyNet was developed with the help of the existing diverse infrastructure in the entertainment production community.

HollyNet was formed in April 1996 with the governing board consisting of Warner Bros, Viacom/Paramount, Sony Entertainment, Universal Studios and Lucasfilms. The HollyNet initiative was coordinated by the Entertainment Technology Centre(ETC) a partnership between the entertainment and technology industries and the University of Southern California's School of Cinema & Television.

HollyNet members' Multimedia applications demand a huge amount bandwidth, processing power, and far outreach the abilities of the former method of information exchange.
